Install mods (Minecraft: Java Edition)

How to install mods on your server:

1. Install a software that supports mods on your server

   To use mods on your server, you need to install a server software (mod loader) that is capable of running mods. Aternos offers several server software options that support mods. The biggest selection of mods is available for Forge, but there are also alternative software options such as Fabric that offer more features or better performance. You will need to determine for yourself which software best suits your needs.
   
   Choose the best software for you and then install it using one of the following links:

   • Quilt: https://aternos.org/software/quilt

2. Install your mod on your server

   Aternos offers a wide range of mods from CurseForge and Modrinth. You can use our search function to find the right mod for your needs and install it in just a few clicks. Check out all of our available mods here: https://aternos.org/addons/

   An example mod for Forge is Tinkers' Construct. https://aternos.org/addons/a/curseforge/tinkers-construct.

3. Install dependencies on your server

   Certain mods require other mods to function properly, these are known as dependencies. Dependencies are often listed on the Aternos mod list, but in some cases, you may need to check the mod descriptions on Modrinth or Curseforge to find all the dependencies.

   The example mod, Tinkers Construct, requires the installation of Mantle to work.

4. Install a mod loader on your computer

   To join a modded server, you need to install the right mod loader, such as Forge or Fabric, Quilt or Neoforge on your computer. It is essential to use the same loader and version as the one used on the server. If you use an incorrect version, you are likely to encounter errors. The easiest way to install mods on your client is to use a custom launcher.
   
   There are multiple custom launchers that allow you to easily install mod loaders and mods:
   • Prism Launcher: https://prismlauncher.org
   • Modrinth App: https://modrinth.com/app
   • Curseforge App: https://www.curseforge.com/download/app

5. Install mods on your computer

   Use your custom launcher to download and install all the mods on your computer that you have installed on your server. Make sure that the mod you have installed on your computer matches the version installed on your server.

   If you don't use a custom launcher such as the ones described in step 4, you can place the mods in the mods folder (inside the .minecraft folder)

6. Start your game and server

   If you have completed all the necessary steps, start your Aternos server and Minecraft on your computer. If neither displays any errors, you're good to go! Join your server and enjoy playing with your mods.
